Eczema and baby clothes: fabrics, seams and wash routines
Atopic dermatitis (infantile eczema) affects up to 20% of infants. An eczema flare impairs the skin's protective barrier, letting moisture escape and irritants enter. Choosing the right fabrics can calm the itch-scratch cycle.
Fabrics that soothe eczema
- 100% Pure Cotton: Breathable, soft, and absorbent. Check labels to avoid blends with polyester.
- Bamboo Viscose & TENCEL: Smooth cellulose fibers that feel cool against inflamed skin and wick sweat.
- Knitted Silk: Frictionless texture often recommended by dermatologists for severe skin irritation.
Fabrics and details to avoid
- Coarse Wool & Synthetics: Thick wool cuticles prick sensitive nerve endings; polyester traps sweat, which stings broken skin.
- Rough Seams & Tags: Stiff nylon threads and neck labels cause mechanical friction. Choose tagless designs with flatlock or external seams.
Safe laundry routine
Use a liquid, fragrance-free and dye-free detergent. Skip fabric softeners and dryer sheets entirely—they leave a waxy chemical coating on fibers that irritates eczema. Run an extra rinse cycle to wash away all detergent traces.
